THE LIFE IN THE POND



Chidren in class 3 have reproduced the pond ecosystem using legos.


They have chosen to represent the pond ecosystem because it’s a singular aquatic habitat with many interesting animals.


They have created biotic and abiotic factors, showing how in an ecosystem all the living organisms and all the nonliving things are related to each other.


At first pupils have created the aquatic habitat; then they have completed it with the pond vegetation, a great and detailed variety of aquatic plants, and with some of the best known animals you can find in a pond.


At the end of the activity they have used lego bricks to build a pond food chain, identifying and representing the producers, the consumers and the decomposers.

The pond habitat

It’s a special aquatic habitat, different from others: sea water is salty, but pond water is not. Lake water is deep, but pond water is shallow. Rivers run, but ponds are still.


What lives in a pond?

The aquatic and floating vegetation: beautiful water lilies, sagittaria plants, bulrushes, weeping willows …








Lots of animals live in a pond because of still water, muddy soil and light: dragonflies, frogs, tadpoles, mosquitoes, kingfishers, grey herons, water snakes, mallard ducks, marsh hawks, several fish… Animals come to ponds to drink or bathe. Pond plants give the animals food and shelter. Ponds are their home, their natural habitat!
