Mr. Bucket

The father of two students of our school is a professional actor in the company:

Last Wednesday we enjoyed a lot with his performance in our school. It all starts in a very simple way... Let me introduce you to Mr. Bucket... He seems very nice, but there is a problem, he refuses to act!

Our narrator, wants to tell us a story he has read, The Wizar of Oz. As Mr. Bucket does not want to act, he calls out for volunteer... No problem! Here they are:

Little by little, with the help of a few disguises that come out from Mr Bucket,  he turns children into actors!

Have a look at Aunty Emma!

He tells the students what they have to say and how they have to say it.
Wonderful experience both for the "actors" and the audience.

I have just downloaded a set of Lego Challenge Card in the following link:

This giant collection of LEGO challenge cards is a simple prep, fun way to sneak some STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) learning into the day. With cards that range from easy to difficult, little engineers will love tackling the designs. Grab your set below and add them to a classroom center, engineering activity, homeschool lesson, or free play. There are so many ways to use these cards!

Playing with mathematics.

Here are some games to motivate students with mathematics.

1. Addition using LEGO.

2 tens and 6 units + 1 ten and 5 units...

= 3 tens and 11 units

then, we group the units: 4 tens and 1 unit.

2. Paper fortune teller + dice.

We write multiplications on the fotune teller paper and roll the dice...

3. Plastic cups.

They are perfect to represent HUNDREDS, TENS and UNITS.

4. Mental calculation.

I use popsicle sticks to match a pair of students...
I say a number, then roll the dice and we add it or substract it.
The fastest student passes to the next round.

Getting Creative

Our School has been taking part in Creativity contests for a while now. It's become an initial part in our lives. Not only we take part in competitions, but also we organize special events where we invite students from other schools in the area. This yoear we had a lot of fun.

From Least to Greatest

Today we have made a very fun game in math class, in second grade.

First, in pairs, we have measured our partner.

Second, we have written down on a paper the centimetres that we exceed one metre, for example, if you are 1 metre and 25 centimetres tall, you write down 25 on a piece of paper.

Third, we have used the numbers written on the papers to order ourselves from "least to highest". .

Fourth, we have reflected on the result:
the numbers were well ordered, however, we were not properly ordered by height. Surely we have not measured our partners well.

University of Salamanca

The UNIVERSITY OF SALAMANCA is the oldest university in Spain...; and one of the oldest universities in the world. I was founded in 1218, so next year, it is turning 800 years old.
To celebrate this important event, our students have watched this beautiful video...

Then, they have been thinking about how different the university was 800 years ago...

As a consequence. they decided to create a modern facade...

In the picture you can see a group of students working on their designs...

Cassini´s Grand Finale.

Time ago in class we talked about the Solar System. Nothing that I did, explained or used in class stirred the minds of my little students as intensely as this video of NASA, today, explaining the exploration mission of the space probe CASSINI. The Grand Finale of this remarkable mission will take place next September. It will be the end of a great journey that began 20 years ago ...

This is how Earth looks from Saturn (this is the image NASA used to commemorate EARTH DAY). Truly awesome.

Jigsaw Puzzle Group Activity

As stated in the following website

the JIGSAW CLASSROOM is a cooperative learning technique that promotes better learning, improves student motivation and increases enjoyment of the learning experience. Fifth grade students are studying one of the units on their NATURAL SCIENCE textbook using this technique.

First, I divided the class into six groups. Each group was in charge of a different part of the unit. They read and took notes about that part. Textbook is allowed only at this point of the process.

Second, you mix the groups . Every group is now composed of six members, one from every group. They must explain the other members their part of the unit and the others must take notes.

Third: when all the members have spoken, the return to their original group. They have to put in common all the information the have collected. In this way, they will obtain all the information about the unit.

In the following pictures you can see students, fully engaged, during the second step of this process.

Project week "The little prince" at Erich Kästner School in Gera

Today we started our big project week about the book "The little prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The whole school is working at this project for one week.

Every class is creating a different media belonging to the book, e.g. a movie with Lego/Playmobile, a Comic, a PowerPoint, rod dolls, a radioplay .... Here you can see some of our first steps:

At first - read out the story without in a short version, without showing any pictures.
Afterwards we gave them just an outline of a boy and the children draw "the little prince" out of their mind. So a picuture of the main figure arised in their heads.

Of course some of them already knew the book or the movie.

On class decided to work with the "Lego Movie" maker. So today the wrote a storyboard, built scenery and started with the first recordings.
